FALLING BACK | REFRESHING OLD STAPLES FOR A NEW SEASON

Happy first weekend of… fall?! Somehow, we skipped autumn entirely this week and went straight from almost 30°C weather to snow and frigid, negative temperatures. As we’ve established, autumn is my favourite time of year, but this week I was forced to bust out my cold weather pieces — I hadn’t even finished getting my fall wardrobe together, yet wintery conditions were upon us. It was time to get creative (and warm!) and make the most of my existing wardrobe — but the good news is that our drastic weather shift here in Calgary inspired today’s post all about refreshing old favourites for a new season! Absolutely everything I’m wearing today is something I’ve owned for several months or years — and you’ve also seen most of these pieces here at JustineCelina previously.

Although I love to shop just as much as the next girl (and now it’s even become part of the way I earn a living!), I think there’s something to be said for learning how to make the most of your existing wardrobe when the seasons change and looking to new sources of inspiration to inform your sartorial choices. That’s exactly what I did for today’s look — I can’t wait to share how I styled these well loved wardrobe staples through fresh eyes for Autumn 2017 to reflect current seasonal trends! A MINI MOUNTAIN GETAWAY

If you’ve been following along on social media, you may have read or heard a few times how exhausted I was feeling at the end of last week. There are some incredibly exciting things happening behind the scenes right now that can’t wait to share with you soon — but it’s been a ton of work getting them off the ground! I’ve mentioned previously that I’m a major workaholic (I absolutely love what I do!) and sometimes it can get the better of me. I’m definitely more mindful of it these days since balance is something I seem to be constantly pursuing. It can be really difficult for me to step away from my work — especially since I find myself really getting in a groove creatively and wanting to keep up the momentum. But, as I’ve also mentioned previously, I need to remember that while consistency is important in producing great creative work, so is taking care of myself so I can stay inspired and not completely burn out (which I was on the verge of last week). I’m sure many of you fellow creatives can relate!

So, I took this weekend to rejuvenate and rescheduled every commitment I had. Friday evening we grabbed sushi and wine at our favourite place (Kabuku downtown if any of you Calgarians are wondering), gave each other massages set to spa music and went to bed before midnight (yes I know, we’re old). Saturday I chatted with my oldest friend on the phone for 2 hours, caught up on some housework, blog work and basic R&R. I’m talking skipping my daily HIIT workout and doing research for upcoming projects and content from bed with a big cup of freshly ground, french pressed coffee and a big messy bun — and not getting out of my pyjamas until I took an amazing, 45 minute shower (I actually had time to wash my hair!). I even did a face mask, which I used to do every Sunday evening, but sadly haven’t had the energy for lately. On Sunday, we decided to make the most of this beautiful, early autumn weather and head west towards the Rocky Mountains for a wine picnic. PRE FALL TRANSITIONAL STYLE

I, along with almost every other woman on the planet, will tell you that fall is my favourite time of year, especially for fashion. But September specifically is my favourite month — well, for almost everything (except Pumpkin Spice Lattes… I may be the only woman on the planet who’s not a fan of those!). It’s nice enough outside that we don’t have to be totally bundled up, but cooler temperatures call for more autumnal, layered style. It’s the perfect opportunity to maximize wear time on your favourite summer pieces, but also to begin playing with autumn fashion. So, today’s post a fall-inspired outfit with wear now appeal — a summer-meets-autumn mashup that we only get to wear for a brief window of time here in Calgary! DIY | DISTRESSED BOYFRIEND JEANS

Feeling crafty this weekend? Today I’m showing you how to rough up a pair of denim to achieve the distressed look we’re seeing everywhere this spring! The best part about distressing a pair of jeans you currently own is the denim is already perfectly worn in — and you can totally customize it to your preference! I’ve owned this pair of jeans for about 6 years, but they’re a little too short for me to wear with heels, so I figured I’d get a lot more wear out of them if I distressed them and cropped them a bit. Voila — now I have the perfect pair of spring boyfriends, and I’ve been wearing them constantly! You only need about an hour and a few tools to complete this DIY (and you probably have the tools at home)! WHAT TO WEAR TO | HOLIDAY PARTIES

‘Tis the season! Tonight’s post is another installment in my WHAT TO WEAR series (thanks, Michelle for the request) — I’ve compiled a very comprehensive guide on what to wear to various holiday parties. I’ve included outfit options for every type of party you may be attending — whether it be a corporate gala or black tie event, cocktail party, or a New Years Eve celebration! And now is a great time to shop (it’s when I personally do my holiday shopping), since a lot of retailers are offering Cyber Week and Black Friday promotions. I’ll have more details on that in this post!

Let’s face it — holiday parties are not what they used to be, at least not in Calgary. Five years ago I was dressed to the nines at multiple, extravagant celebrations, while this year neither my boyfriend or I are attending corporate holiday parties. Companies just don’t have the extra cash right now to shell out on these types of events. But rather than focusing on the negative, I put a budget friendly spin on my picks — each piece of clothing is under $200, and most accessories under $100 (with a lot of jewellery $20 or less)!
