JUNE 2020 SOUNDTRACK + SUMMER FASHION FAVS

The first month of summer is drawing to a close — and that means it’s time for my June 2020 Soundtrack! June was an intense month as we moved into Phase 2 of our economic reopening in Calgary and also collectively experienced the largest civil rights movement in history. Amidst it all, we also decided to form a cohort with my family in rural Alberta and have been spending as much time enjoying the tranquility of the prairies as possible! We finally planted that Country Garden I’ve been dreaming about for years (posts to follow!) and it’s been quite a reflective, but healing, month. Over the years, these rolling hills and sunlit fields have always been where I come to feel grounded, creative and free. I’m so grateful for this magical, restorative place — now more than ever. Although COVID has brought with it many challenges, it’s also brought many gifts. In a time when the whole world feels like it’s on pause, I’m making the most of every last second by living and working intentionally, authentically and in alignment with my true self.

My June 2020 Soundtrack features just over 2 hours of ultra chill, easy-listening, instrumental tunes spanning genres — and also, a track from my nephew, DJBThomson, who’s foraying into the music world! A handful of my favourite tracks include Random Forests I Don’t Trust That Bird of Prey, Vladimir Martynov’s The Beautitudes, Headphone Activist’s Lazy, Shook & Ian Urbina’s Isolation, AK & Liam Thomas’s Peace of Mind, Late June’s Burning Slow, Dye O’s Uprising, iamlex’s Aurora, Tōth’s Copilot, Tom Kalani’s Target, Evin Iris’s Collapse Into The Light, Jose Mehlin’s Adjustments, Ghost of Summer’s Woodland Heart, UTAH’s Thirty Two, TOKiMONSTA’s Love That Never, Stan Forebee’s Skyshades, Wolf’s Play It Safe, Teen Daze’s Comfort and DJBThomson’s N!GHT SK¥ (Bass Version). Happy listening!

MAY 2020 SOUNDTRACK + LIFE UPDATE

Happy Friday eve, friends! My May 2020 Soundtrack is coming to you early this month — it’s been a bit of a grind over here as as deadlines for client work, content and taxes overlap. I’ve been working around the clock lately to get everything finished in time to head to the prairies this weekend to plant our Country Garden — and this playlist (plus lots of green tea!) have been pulling me through. In fact, it’s one of my favourite so far this year — featuring 46 inspiring, uplifting, motivating tracks spanning genres (I also had Spotify‘s Deep Focus playlist on heavy rotation!). I’ve been working away on tons of exciting new content BTS that I can’t wait to share next month and have really settled into a nice work-from-home workflow lately — things are definitely looking up!

Where do I even begin with my favourite tracks this month? I could actually list every single one — but if I had to choose, Geographer’s Slave To The Rhythm Work Drug’s Down the Shore, Weathertunes Wait For Me, Dead Horse Beats Never Too Late, Grønhaack’s Her Sleepiness, Gryffin x Noah Kahan’s Heavenly Father, Handbook’s South, Axel Mansoor’s The Other Side, Kayoh’s Northwind, Alex Baker’s Bloom, JR JR’s Cops, Presto! and SPEECHLESS’s Paradise, Glass Animal’s Dreamland, Avery Young’s Shifts of Light, Jordan Critz’s Eternity, Tom Misch & Tobie Tripp’s Day 5: For Carol, Medasin’s Slinky Man, Vacation Club’s Fire Goes Out, chitchat’s San Fransisco, Kid Froopy’s Easy Love, Purity Ring’s peacefall and Peal’s Essential Attitudes sounded especially good to my ears. I hope you enjoy May 2020’s musical stylings — and if you’re interested in a bit of a life update (plus a link for this dreamy dress!), you’ll find them near the end of this post. Have a lovely weekend, beautiful people!

A SIMPLE EASTER DINNER FOR TWO

Remember when I mentioned over the holidays that I wanted to bring more ENTERTAIN content to JustineCelina this year? Although these weren’t quite the circumstances I envisioned (now that’s an understatement!), I’m thrilled to share A Simple Easter Dinner For Two with you today! While Easter certainly looked a lot different for everyone this year given the current global situation, we decided to make the most of it and celebrate here in our home in Calgary — just the two of us. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we’d spend an Easter without the large family gatherings in the country we’ve become accustomed to over the years — but rather than mourning the loss of our cherished traditions, we resolved to stay home and create a few of our own!

In over a decade together, this was the first Easter dinner we’ve celebrated in our home — and I wanted to mark the occasion by capturing these memories to look back on. I put on a dress, ordered flowers, made some nostalgic family recipes along with my first ever carrot cake — then we popped some Prosecco and enjoyed A Simple Easter Dinner For Two (Adam was actually peeling potatoes in the kitchen to my left as I snapped these photos from my tripod!). I was reminded of my ability to find beauty in uncertainty and create amongst chaos — these are things I find very cathartic and truly bring me joy. While it wasn’t a traditional Easter, it was still a lovely weekend — gifting us with lessons in resiliency, enjoying life’s simple pleasures and doing the best you can with what you have, where you are! Whether you’ve stopped by today for details on our Easter in quarantine, are planning a more intimate Easter gathering of your own, or are visiting years in the future once this is all behind us in search of some easy Easter entertaining ideas, I’ve got you covered!

WINTER / SPRING 2020 LOOKBOOK + CONTENT UPDATE

Hey, friends. How’s everyone doing? Wow — what an intense couple of months its been! If you keep up with me on Instagram (and if you don’t, I’d love for you to join me!), you may have some insight into how quickly life has changed here in Calgary as a result of COVID-19. It’s crazy to think that we started shooting my Winter / Spring 2020 Lookbook back in February when the world was a completely different place — I was still planning outfits for all the different personal and professional situations I would typically find myself in as we transition from winter to spring. Things evolved rapidly, so I polled you on Instagram Stories to see if you’d still like to see this LOOKBOOK — and 100% of you responded yes! That said, as we heed the advice of local authorities to stay in whenever possible, I feel it’s important to share we shot these images nearly 2 months ago — and I’ve been working from home ever since to get this post ready.

Today, I’m thrilled to finally share my Winter / Spring 2020 Lookbook with you! If you’re in search of a sartorial escape from reality and a look at a handful of my favourite winter-to-spring transitional trends mashed up with wardrobe staples and practical outfit formulas, you’ve come to the right place. As always, you can expect a melange of high, low, old, new and vintage here today — as well as shoppable links at every price point for those in need of a little retail therapy. This LOOKBOOK features my favourite early spring outfit formulas, ideal for temperatures ranging from about 10 degrees on either side of freezing (believe it or not, it was still snowing here last week!). Even though we’ll be spending the majority of our time indoors for the foreseeable future, I still enjoy seasonal trends mixed with easy basics — and showing you how to re-style them season after season (and year after year!). Pour yourself a delicious glass of rosé and settle in with me this weekend as I highlight my favourite winter-to-spring transitional trends, patterns, prints and colours — plus, how I incorporate them into my work-from-home wardrobe!

COLOUR CRUSH | CLASSIC BLUE

Colour lovers, today I’m thrilled to bring you a fresh post in my COLOUR CRUSH series dedicated to the Pantone 2020 Colour of the Year, Classic Blue! Selected by Pantone in late 2019 for its ability to ‘instil calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era’, it seems especially fitting given the current state of the world. I first introduced you to Classic Blue with January’s Digital Blooms (be sure to hop over to download a free, floral, Pantone 2020 inspired tech wallpaper!) and have been working with this comforting, of-the-moment hue across categories since. That said, although blue has always had a small place in my wardrobe (albeit mostly in denim and more formal attire), as someone with warm colouring, it isn’t a hue I’m typically drawn to. Longtime readers will know that each year I allow Pantone’s selections to inspire and challenge me here at JustineCelina — incorporating the Colour of the Year into my life and content in a way that’s congruent to my personal style. Fast forward to March and I’m absolutely crazy about Classic Blue — and today I’m sharing the inspiration with you!

In the midst of another Winter Storm Warning here in Calgary (and after a particularly heavy week in regards to recent news), I thought this weekend was the perfect time to put the finishing touches on a post I’ve been working on since February. As the way we live continues to change over the coming months, I want JustineCelina to remain a source of inspiration and joy for anyone who needs it — including myself! This instalment of my COLOUR CRUSH series is dedicated to Classic Blue transitional styling, starring one of my favourite casual winter-to-spring outfit formulas, perfect for chilly weather. As always, I’m wearing a melange of high, low, old and new in todays look — a mash up of of transitional wardrobe staples intermixed with trend-forward accessories to create an easy-going late winter outfit that’s quintessentially 2020. If you’re curious about Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year how to integrate Classic Blue into your wardrobe as we transition into spring, fix yourself a mug of your favourite tea and settle in for an uplifting Sunday read!

JANUARY 2020 SOUNDTRACK

Happy Friday, friends! I’m back today my first Monthly Soundtrack of the decade — and it’s one of my favourites in recent memory. Since we spent so much time traveling over the past month, I had to opportunity to discover tons of new artists and explore many different genres! My January 2020 Soundtrack is a 30 track playlist brimming with nearly 2 hours of relaxed, uplifting, inspirational tunes. From the snow covered Canadian rockies to the sandy beaches of southern Mexico, this new year soundtrack was blasting through my speakers (and headphones) all month long!

A handful of January’s stand out tracks include Mike Posner’s Slow It Down, Imaginary Future Float On (a dreamy, stripped down rendition of Modest Mouse’s original), Quinn XCII’s Always Been You, Brock Berringan and Allem Iversom’s Sometime, Judah & the Lion and Kacey Musgraves pictures, fantompower’s free (at ease), Freedom Fly’s Clint Eastwood (another gorgeous, instrumental cover!), Handbook’s Sweet Berries, Saib’s Aqua, ayokay and Nightly’s Sleepless Nights, Kyle McEvoy and Deeb’s Habitual Words, East Forest’s 10 Laws, Nina Nesbitt’s Toxic (apparently I was on an instrumental cover spree this month!), Catching Flies Komorebi and The Band CAMINO’s Daphne Blue (although I could go on!). Extend January’s motivations into February and beyond with my January 2020 Soundtrack!
