ALL ABOUT PAMPAS GRASS

Have you seen this gorgeous, fluffy grass floating around all over your favourite social media platform lately and wondered what it is and where you can get yourself some?! Me too, my friend! In fact, my recent obsession with these beautiful, bohemian plumes has inspired a fresh installment in my ALL ABOUT series — and this time, it’s All About Pampas Grass! You’ve likely seen a surge of pampas trickle into my recent content — I’ve been working with it since the holidays and have since incorporated it into nearly every room in our home (the obsession is real!). Typically my ALL ABOUT series is reserved for FLOWERS, but dried arrangements, grasses and foliage are having a major moment this year — so I’ve expanded!

If you’re intrigued by Pampas Grass and want to know where to purchase it, how much it costs and how to condition it to it to keep it from shedding, consider my All About Pampas Grass post your one-stop educational resource to learn everything you ever wanted to know about this popular plume. Today we’re chatting alternate names and meanings, where to purchase locally as well as online, varieties available, vase life, what to look for when purchasing, how to care for and condition your pampas so you can enjoy it for years to come. I’m also sharing some dried arrangement tips and innovative ideas on how to incorporate Pampas Grass into your decor. Fellow boho lovers, pour yourself a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and settle in for a relaxing read as we cover all things pampas — my favourite ornamental grass!

FEBRUARY 2019 SOUNDTRACK

The shortest (and coldest!) month of the year is drawing to a close — and that means it’s time for my February 2019 Soundtrack! This cozy, intimate, 43 track playlist makes perfect background music for the office, your daily commute, relaxing at home or entertaining. It’s an eclectic, upbeat, chill mixture of everything I’ve had on repeat for the past month spanning genres — with a heavy focus on instrumental with a free spirited, folk-y twist!

I discovered tons of new tracks during February (and new music from a few of my favourite artists!), but Beauvois’s Fall Back, Anna of the North’s Leaning on Myself, Brett’s Tenenbaum, Star Slinger’s Choose Yourself (like the modern day version of Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen for creatives — anyone else remember that song?!), Richard Houghten’s Wind Travel, Koresma’s Canyon Walls, Arms and Sleepers I Miss The Melody Of, Dermot’s Kennedy’s After Rain, Roo Pains Silver Moon, Rand Aldo’s Tomorrow Will Save Us, Airwaves You Gotta Keep Moving, Astron’s Astral Projection, alt-J’s Warm Foothills, Villager’s Nothing Arrived, Jay Wolf & Day Wave’s Your Way, EREZ’s Runnin, Tim Legend’s When The World Ended and RKCB’s Flowers for Vases were on heavy rotation. Cozy up in front of the fireplace with a delicious glass of red wine or your favourite herbal tea and indulge your ears in the sweet musical styling of February’s Monthly Soundtrack!

APARTMENT FRIENDLY MODERN HOLIDAY DECOR

Friends, I’m elated to finally share our Apartment Friendly Modern Holiday Decor with you today! If you’ve been following along with JustineCelina this past year, you’ll know we began refreshing our inner city Calgary apartment to create our dream home. We started from scratch with a fresh coat of paint, new furniture and new decor — and this year, I was so excited to decorate for the holidays for the first time in 6 years (we decorated fully for our first Christmas here… and never again!). Since we’re always out of town for the holidays (we split our time between our families homes in rural Alberta), I usually just save myself the extra time and effort and keep our holiday decor super minimal. Because we live in an apartment and have limited storage, the thought of hauling down a huge artificial tree from recesses of our entrance way closet and sorting through boxes of decor was simply never a priority during this busy month! But this year, I decided to sell all the old decor that no longer worked of us and start fresh (literally!) with our first real Christmas tree, tons of greenery and festive DIYs, plus all new holiday decor — and tonight I’m sharing every detail about how I pulled it all together!

If you’re a fan of mid century modern or more natural, earthy, bohemian elements, I’m sure you’ll agree that traditional holiday decor leaves a lot to be desired. I knew I wanted the look and feel of our holiday decor to be cohesive with our space and bring in lots of living greenery, warm neutrals, natural wood and stone textures, mixed metallic accents and free spirited, whimsical textures. I also wanted to incorporate a nod to vintage, mid-century inspired design while keeping a mixture of traditional and contemporary elements and cozy up the space with layers of faux fur, wool and chunky knits. After many HomeSense, Canadian Tire and plant / flower shop runs, I’m so pleased with the way our holiday home has come together and can’t wait to spend some downtime here as the year draws to a close! Pour yourself a juicy glass of red wine and come join me on our leather sofa as I walk you through our Apartment Friendly Modern Holiday Decor!

HOW TO SELECT AND CARE FOR HOUSEPLANTS

If you would have told me 3 years ago that I’d be writing an article about How to Select and Care For Houseplants, I would have never believed you! While my green thumb is fairly new, to say I’ve learned a lot since I began selecting and caring for our houseplants since November would be a major understatement. And while I don’t yet consider myself an expert, I have managed to keep our 15 houseplants alive for 9 months and counting now — so I must be doing something right! Our plants are growing like crazy this summer and while I’ve wanted to publish this post for awhile now, seeing them thrive prompted me to push this highly requested post to the top of my list!

If you’re considering plant parenthood, it’s important to remember that plants are living things and they deserve their best chance to thrive. They become your responsibility as soon you bring them home and you should commit to caring for them just as you would a pet. Plants need a great home, water (and sometimes food!), sunshine and most importantly, consistent care and love! Today I’m kicking off a brand new PLANT section here at JustineCelina with a crash course in plant selection and care — including how to select the right plants for your space, cost, the best plant shops in Calgary, planter selection and potting tips, and watering guidelines and schedules! If you’ve always been curious about the details of our urban jungle and how I keep our houseplants healthy, happy and thriving, pour yourself a delicious glass of wine, kick back, relax and settle in for a in-depth mid-week read!

I’ve always said that flowers are my not so secret weapon to elevate any celebration or space — I absolutely love to have fresh flowers in our home whenever possible. But today I’m sharing exactly how to select flowers that compliment your space and showcasing a variety of blooms and foliage not yet seen here at JustineCelina!
