NATURAL HABITAT

If you’re looking for some serenity on this Sunday afternoon you’ve come to the right place! Today’s post is a super relaxed one where I’m sharing my must-haves for natural, airy, summer style. These are the wardrobe staples I truly feel most comfortable in and like to throw on when I’m just chilling out! Whether I’m dressed up or dressed down I’ve always had a major soft spot for light, flowy fabrics and natural textures. I’ve been living in these breezy basics during my time in the prairies this summer — I know I can throw them on when comfort is a must, but so is looking cute and pulled together. I also chat about stepping up my casual shoe game and share my current favourite pair for weekend adventures! Take a break from the hustle of everyday life for a few minutes, pour yourself a cup of tea and come hang out amoung the fields of wheat and trickling streams near my childhood home in rural Alberta!

Welcome. If you’re new around these parts, you may have never heard me talk about my love for the prairies. They’re a freeing, therapeutic place where you can find me enjoying some downtime when I need a break from the hustle of the city! I always come away from a trip to my childhood home feeling grounded and inspired. Sometimes it’s necessary to just slow down and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings — so today I’m sharing a few scenes from my favourite place to reconnect and recharge.

I’ve been out here on a bit of a ‘workcation’ and it’s so inspiring to create in a new setting. After my work is finished for the day, you can find me exploring the forgotten back roads and vast fields, foraging for new treasures. Therefore, I haven’t been too dressed up lately — I’ve been chilling out in what I consider my more natural state. My casual summer style basics include airy, oversized cardigans, great v-necks, natural stone necklaces and rings, a worn-in pair of denim and a cute, comfortable pair of flats that are always up for an adventure.

Although I really love colour, these light, airy summer neutrals are so easy to wear and they’re what I find myself gravitating towards lately for more relaxed outfits. I mentioned this in a casual spring style post, but the most worn items in my closet are definitely my v-necks — and I recently discovered the best v-necks I’ve ever worn! They wear and wash so well, plus the tunic silouhette gives them the perfect amount of drape. I own one in almost every colour.

I may be a little biased, but I think the prairies are such a beautiful and underappreciated piece of our Canadian landscape. Isn’t the purple hue of this alfalfa gorgeous? I’ve been working with my friend (and amazing flower designer) Rebecca recently on some urban foraging content, so I’ve been noticing natural growth and wildflowers of the prairies as well. Stay tuned for more on that idea later this summer!

I know you feel me when I say that a great pair of denim is hard to find — let alone a well-fitting pair with tasteful distressing. That’s why I always prefer to distress denim myself and I created a blog post with a step-by-step guide illustrating how to do it! These Low Rise Medium Wash Jeggings from Joe Fresh are so comfortable and I love the slightly worn wash. I love them so much that actually I purchased 2 pairs — the ones I distressed and am wearing in this post and a pair that I kept intact. If you’re interested, I just picked them up last week and they’re only $34!

I’ve been working on stepping up my casual shoe game this year and am totally smitten with these adorable VANS Chauffettes! I love the nautical-inspired design and the natural fabrics — plus, the comfort factor can’t be beat. They add a comfy-cute vibe to relaxed summer outfits and the light hues look gorgeous against summer skin. I usually end up having to replace my flats each season, but this pair is made with a washable (and removable) footbed, which will definitely help to prolong their lifespan. They’re also made with water based inks and dyes so they wear well in the elements. They’re my go-to shoes for outdoor summer adventures!

To say that I’ve been living in this Tissue Knit Kimono Cardigan from Kersh lately would be an understatement. If a kimono and a cardigan had a love child it would be this gorgeous, breezy knit. I love how it manages to be simultaneously airy but cozy and it’s perfect for mild summer days. It’s such a versatile layering piece and I’ve been wearing it with so many summery tops and dresses.
