DIY | DISTRESSED BOYFRIEND JEANS

Feeling crafty this weekend? Today I’m showing you how to rough up a pair of denim to achieve the distressed look we’re seeing everywhere this spring! The best part about distressing a pair of jeans you currently own is the denim is already perfectly worn in — and you can totally customize it to your preference! I’ve owned this pair of jeans for about 6 years, but they’re a little too short for me to wear with heels, so I figured I’d get a lot more wear out of them if I distressed them and cropped them a bit. Voila — now I have the perfect pair of spring boyfriends, and I’ve been wearing them constantly! You only need about an hour and a few tools to complete this DIY (and you probably have the tools at home)! Stay tuned for an easy, illustrated, step-by-step guide to creating a distressed pair of boyfriend jeans yourself.

CARROT CASHEW ZOODLES WITH CRISPY SESAME TOFU

Did you know I have dinner with my college girlfriends (almost) every week? We’ve been doing it since 2008 — so over the years, we’ve shared a lot of meals together. At our last girl dinner, we were chatting about what each of our signature dishes are — I was curious about what they’d say my signature dish was, because I strive to keep things fresh in my kitchen! The answer was ‘something fresh and Asian-inspired, or a make-your-own entrée salad’. And fair enough! Those are my favourite things to eat (and to serve when I’m entertaining). You’ll find lots of those recipes here on the blog!

So, I decided to turn one of my ‘signature dishes’ on its head and use new ingredients in new ways. I revisited tofu, which I’ve marinated with savoury, sesame flavours and finished with a golden crisp. I made the creamiest Asian-inspired sauce with no peanut butter in sight (hint: the secret ingredient is cooked carrots)! It was also my first time making zoodles (spiralized zucchini ‘noodles’) and I’ll chat more about it in this post. My Carrot Cashew Zoodles with Crispy Sesame Tofu is an ultra-light, ultra-fresh spring stirfry brimming with clean, plant-based protein. Cheers to stepping outside of your comfort zone in the kitchen!

FEBRUARY BEAUTY FAVOURITES

I wore so many soft, rosy hues in February! My pink obsession is still going strong and last month it definitely crept its way into the beauty department. A bit of a disclaimer — since it’s my Blogiversary month (JustineCelina turned one on March 2nd!) you’ll notice a strong Rose Quartz and Serenity theme on the blog this month leading up to my celebratory post. I’m super inspired by the Pantone colours of the year, and I’ll be flooding your feeds with tons of pretty, flowery, pink and blue imagery in March. Sorry (not sorry) in advance!

I also developed a thing for deep green eyeliners, rediscovered an old standby mascara, and a multi-purpose baked highlighter. If you’re a fan of soft, pretty, natural looking makeup then you’ll love my February Beauty Favourites. All but one of my favorites are also under $10 — I firmly believe you don’t have to spend a lot to look like a million bucks!

FEBRUARY SOUNDTRACK

This is the music I had on repeat during love month. Since I’ve started using Spotify, I feel like I’m able to explore all different genres (and time periods) of music much more fluidly. So, my February Soundtrack is a a really eclectic mash up of happy, feel good tunes! Overall, I’m just able to have a lot more freedom with these monthly soundtracks. February was a very inspired month for me, and I draw so much of my creative inspiration from the music I listen to. I discovered tons of new artists, but I also rediscovered some old favourites like alt-J. Since I had access to whatever I wanted, I went on a huge Beatles binge — so I’ve ended this playlist with my favourite Beatles song. If you’re looking for some great thinking and creating music, I think you’ll love this month’s mix.

Programming Note: beginning this month, I’m switching over to Spotify exclusively for monthly soundtracks. If you’re a Spotify user too, come join me over there!

COLOURPOP CRÈME GEL LINER PHOTOS, REVIEW, SWATCHES

Today I’m reviewing the 9 shades I own from the Colourpop Crème Gel Liner range. Currently there are 25 shades available, and I decided to pick up 9 to try out — 4 metallic shades and 5 mattes. Colourpop’s Crème Gel Liners retail at $5.00 USD for 0.01 oz., just a fraction of the cost of their high-end counterparts. As makeup-loving contact wearer with extremely sensitive eyes, I think I’m the perfect candidate to test out eyeliner! I’ve been wearing and testing them for about 4 months (since they first launched the product!) so I have a really good handle on them. If you’re looking for a great alternative to higher-end eyeliners, or want to learn more about eyeliner in general, this post is for you! I also include links to my other Colourpop reviews and favourite products.

BLUSHING BEET JUICE + MY 100th BLOG POST

Sometimes I think it’s important to look for recipe inspiration in new places. As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been on a bit of a beet kick (and a pink kick) lately — so today’s fresh juice recipe is inspired by pink hues!  This juice is totally different than what I would usually make — and it’s all because I combined ingredients for colour first, and flavour second. My Blushing Beet Juice incorporates seasonal produce like beets, oranges and grapefruit with ingredients that I don’t normally juice, like strawberries (which have been looking particularly delicious lately, even though they’re not in season). The result is a perfectly sweet, balanced pink juice, packed full of amazing, heart healthy ingredients. Enjoy this vibrant pink juice for love month — the recipe makes enough for two generous servings, and you can also freeze it to make your own popsicles (kids love them!). Have some fun in the kitchen this February and shake up your juicing menu!

COZY IN CAMEL | MY FAVOURITE TRANSITIONAL PIECES

I always find that February is a difficult month, fashion-wise! It’s not the dead of winter anymore, but it’s also definitely not spring. Here in Calgary the weather has been pretty mild, but there’s still snow on the ground (and let’s be real — it could still snow anytime!). At this time of year I get sick of wearing pants and crave the more feminine silhouettes of spring — dresses and skirts! I find myself reaching for a lot of neutral tones, but punching my look up with bold accessories and statement lips (especially since I’ve been so obsessed with pink, but am picky about wearing it!). I’ve mentioned before that the core of my wardrobe consists of pieces that I can wear for both work and play — this outfit is an example of something I’d wear if I was hanging out with friends, or headed to a business meeting. Today I’m sharing my favourite transitional pieces from winter-to-spring in Alberta!
