Merry Christmas Eve, friends! Can you believe we’ve nearly made it to the end of 2020? What a year it’s been. Despite everything that’s happened and how different this season looks, it always brings me great joy to prepare our home for the holidays — and tonight I’m thrilled to share our Mid Century Meets Boho Holiday Decor! Even though it will just be the two of us this Christmas, I knew I wanted to keep things fun, fresh and festive this holiday season. This is our third year decorating our recently refreshed inner city Calgary apartment for the holidays — although our holiday decor went up much later than I originally intended (I ordered a tree at the beginning of November that just arrived just last week — how quintessentially 2020!), we love the way it came together. In fact, I think this year’s holiday decor may just be my favourite yet! As always, I mixed high, low, old and new to infuse the apartment with Christmas spirit — and today I’m detailing exactly how I pulled it all together!
Whether you’ve been with me here at JustineCelina for years or have just recently joined (welcome!), you’ll know I’m all about finding creative ways to make my favourite pieces feel fresh again — be it in my home or in your wardrobe. That said, given the state of the world (and in light of the current restrictions here in Alberta), I knew didn’t want to rely on having to shop in person for our holiday tree this year. So, instead of purchasing fresh tree as we’ve done in years past, I decided to have some fun with it and ordered a flocked artificial tree — and I adore the effect! Other than our tree and a few small decor pieces, everything else we’ve owned for years. As we live in an apartment with limited storage, it’s simply not practical for us to purchase entirely new decor each season (but to be honest, I don’t think that’s practical for anyone!). If you’re in search of some creative holiday DIYs and boho Christmas decorating ideas, you’ve come to the right place — join me for a glass of bubbly as I share how I created a warm, modern and inviting holiday atmosphere in our home this season!
Friends, I’m elated to finally share our Apartment Friendly Modern Holiday Decor with you today! If you’ve been following along with JustineCelina this past year, you’ll know we began refreshing our inner city Calgary apartment to create our dream home. We started from scratch with a fresh coat of paint, new furniture and new decor — and this year, I was so excited to decorate for the holidays for the first time in 6 years (we decorated fully for our first Christmas here… and never again!). Since we’re always out of town for the holidays (we split our time between our families homes in rural Alberta), I usually just save myself the extra time and effort and keep our holiday decor super minimal. Because we live in an apartment and have limited storage, the thought of hauling down a huge artificial tree from recesses of our entrance way closet and sorting through boxes of decor was simply never a priority during this busy month! But this year, I decided to sell all the old decor that no longer worked of us and start fresh (literally!) with our first real Christmas tree, tons of greenery and festive DIYs, plus all new holiday decor — and tonight I’m sharing every detail about how I pulled it all together!
If you’re a fan of mid century modern or more natural, earthy, bohemian elements, I’m sure you’ll agree that traditional holiday decor leaves a lot to be desired. I knew I wanted the look and feel of our holiday decor to be cohesive with our space and bring in lots of living greenery, warm neutrals, natural wood and stone textures, mixed metallic accents and free spirited, whimsical textures. I also wanted to incorporate a nod to vintage, mid-century inspired design while keeping a mixture of traditional and contemporary elements and cozy up the space with layers of faux fur, wool and chunky knits. After many HomeSense, Canadian Tire and plant / flower shop runs, I’m so pleased with the way our holiday home has come together and can’t wait to spend some downtime here as 2018 draws to a close! Pour yourself a juicy glass of red wine and come join me on our leather sofa as I walk you through our Apartment Friendly Modern Holiday Decor!
In preparation for the holidays each year, I relish in the process of pouring over all the festive content I’ve created here at JustineCelina over the past 5 years to get inspired (now 25 posts and counting!). Given all the challenges 2020 has presented, I wasn’t surprised to see my holiday content trending earlier than ever, as people seem to be craving an an extra dose of joy this season. So, I thought it was the perfect time to update my Ultimate Holiday Inspiration Roundup post, featuring a collection of my favourite holiday-themed posts across categories, for easy browsing reference! Although this Christmas in quarantine is unlike any we’ve experienced before, I’m committed to finding joy, continuing to create and make things beautiful, embracing new traditions and making new at-home memories — and I hope I can inspire you to do the same. If you’re looking for creative, fun and attainable ideas to inspire you to eat, drink, DIY, decorate, entertain (within your own household!), dress and glam in style this holiday season, you’ve come to the right place!
Whether you’re in search of modern decor ideas, casual holiday-at-home outfit ideas, how to choose the perfect red lip, gift ideas for the ladies in your life, easy cocktails or plant-based festive recipes, simple DIY projects, flower arranging tips, or entertaining inspiration for 2 – 4, I’ve got you covered! You know the drill — put on your coziest robe, pour yourself a delicious glass of your favourite festive libation (may I suggest my Homemade Dairy Free Coconut Rum Eggnog?) and cozy up with me to celebrate the holidays JustineCelina style. Cheers to a happy, healthy and joyous holiday season!
With the holidays just around the corner and the height of entertaining season upon us, I’m elated to share my go-to Easy Holiday Entertaining Ideas in my first dedicated ENTERTAIN post in… gulp… 3 years! The absence of entertaining content here at JustineCelina in recent years has happened authentically, as we’ve scaled back on entertaining in general — simply because life is busy (I’m sure you can relate, especially at this time of year!). Although we love to have an apartment full of company eating, drinking and be merry during the holidays, I’m all about making this festive time of year as fun, stress free and healthy as possible — and that’s what this post is all about! Whether you’ve been with me for years or are new to my cozy little corner of the internet (welcome!), you’ll know I also love to incorporate better-for-you food and drink whenever we’re hosting or attending a party — because I believe in balance and mindful choices in every season of life.
Earlier this month as I pulled out our festive decor and entertaining essentials I discovered Kombrewcha — a delicious, 4.4% ABV hard kombucha made from organic ingredients. As a plant based eater with a sensitive stomach thanks to numerous food intolerances, I’ve long enjoyed kombucha as a way to help keep my digestion on track — especially during the holidays! I also love to mix this effervescent, probiotic-rich, fermented tea into my COCKTAILS (if you follow along with my Instagram Stories, you’ll know I’ve been developing kombucha cocktails since last summer!). This holiday season, I was absolutely delighted to find a better-for-you beverage that incorporates all of my libation must-haves (made from incredible ingredients and free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar!) in a convenient, ready-to-enjoy format. Tonight I’ve partnered with this new to Alberta brand to host a casual holiday dinner party and share my tried and true Easy Holiday Entertaining Ideas — complete with my best decor, styling, hosting, food and drink, fashion and beauty tips to create a festive and memorable evening. Cheers to a happy, healthy and joyous holiday season!
Red lip season is officially upon us — and as a self proclaimed red lip aficionado (I’m not ashamed to admit I own 30+ red lipsticks!) I’m thrilled to share My Top 5 Red Lipsticks for the Holidays with you! Although I don’t incorporate red into my holiday decor, it’s a colour I love to wear, as well as translate into my BEAUTY routine during this festive time of year. A gorgeous red lip is the perfect way to make a casual look feel more festive — but it’s also a sophisticated compliment to your holiday party attire! I firmly believe red lips give you superpowers — and in December, I find myself reaching for my favourite red shades almost on the daily. After years of trying and testing an absurd amount of red lipsticks across an expansive range of shades, undertones, formulas and price points, I curated the absolute crème de la crème for Holiday 2020!
My Top 5 Red Lipsticks for the Holidays feature my all time favourite, festive red lipsticks — the true gems of my collection that I look forward to pulling out each holiday season! As always, I’ve included a variety of products ranging from traditional, long wearing liquid lipsticks, to natural, vegan products to elegant, hybrid formulas. This dedicated review post in my recently introduced MY TOP 5 series is brimming with try-on photos (due to technical difficulties, these will be added shortly!), swatches and application tips — plus lip liner recommendations to pair with each shade to create a full, defined pout that can withstand all the eating, drinking and being merry you’ll be doing this holiday season! Pour yourself a juicy glass of red and get ready for a serious dose of holiday glam, coupled with an introduction to colour theory and my best tips and tricks to find your perfect, festive red lip. My Top 5 Red Lipsticks for the Holidays also make marvellous gifts for the beauty lover in your life!
Autumn is in full swing here in Calgary — have you started to transition your decor along with the seasons? If you’re anything like me, as you transition your wardrobe into fall to reflect our changing landscape and cooler temperatures, you also crave that same change in your home. Although I think it’s important to keep things fresh and be inspired by your environment (especially as a creative or someone who works from home), it’s certainly not practical to be shopping for entirely new decor with every season change! Today’s post is dedicated to simple, inexpensive ideas you can implement in your own home to Transition Your Decor Into Fall — all while drawing inspiration from fresh sources (hint: I’ll be referencing the Pantone Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 Fashion Colour Trend Report!) and making use of what you already own.
I started slowly collecting inspiration for our Fall Living Room Update and bringing autumn into our home in mid September. The weather had started to shift and the trees had started to yellow — and I was in full on fall planning mode (I even created a Pinterest board!). But the timing I had in mind didn’t work out as planned — I had to park the Living Room update to finish up our Entrance Way (this next instalment in our SPACE REFRESH series is now live!) — and this is where we’ve ended up. But rather than waiting to publish our Fall Living Room Update in one big reveal, I’ve decided to share our decor in transition to show you that you don’t have to make drastic changes (or spend a lot!) to make a big impact. If you’re searching for some cozy, autumnal decor inspiration this weekend, fix yourself a chai latte (or perhaps a glass of scotch?) and come curl up in my Living Room for all my best transitional decorating tips!
To kick off December, I had the pleasure of attending a wreath making workshop with the lovely and talented Rebecca Dawn Design. The wine and holiday cheer were flowing — and between all the eating, drinking and being merry, I created this Asymmetrical Holiday Wreath! I took you along via Insta Stories and after lots of questions and comments about the process, I finally had some time to photograph the wreath and publish a DIY post for you (better late than never, right?!). If you have an hour to spare, you too can create this modern, Scandinavian style holiday wreath with a handful of inexpensive, easy to source materials! They also make a lovely hostess gift if you’re looking for last minute ideas with a handmade, personal touch.
This year, I’ve definitely taken a more minimalistic approach to the holidays and decorating. Since my main focus these past few months has been refreshing our living room (stay tuned for the reveal in the New Year!) and we’re out of town visiting family for the holidays, we didn’t even set up a tree! Instead we decorated our new Bird of Paradise plant with a few twinkling lights, added some cotton stems to our vases and hung this Asymmetrical Holiday Wreath! If you’re looking for a simple DIY to add a festive touch to your minimalistic decor this holiday season, a fresh wreath is the perfect addition. Our home is brimming with greenery and lots of natural wood textures with a mid century modern vibe — so I selected Cedar, Pine, Brunia, Eucalyptus pods, Red Ironbark Eucalyptus and Magnolia Leaves for our wreath (it’s also makes the living room smell amazing — no tree required!). If you’d like to learn how to make an Asymmetrical Holiday Wreath of your own, throw on your favourite Christmas playlist, settle in with a glass of your favourite festive beverage (may I suggest Classic Winter Citrus Red Sangria?) and let’s get started!
